Research Interests

My group has been interested in the thermodynamic properties of dilute solutions, especially those containing reacting solutes. We have measured, modeled, and predicted thermodynamic quantities G, H, S, V, Cp, etc., for a variety of reactions such as surfactant aggregation, reverse micelle formation, ion pairing, acid ionization, and intermolecular hydrogen bonding as functions of concentration, ionic strength, temperature, pressure, and solvent composition. Students have designed, built, and used a variety of instrumentation in these studies including densimeters, conductimeters, osmometers, ion-selective electrodes, and calorimeters. We have specialized in the use of calorimetric techniques including flow, isoperibol, and scanning to study dilution, mixing, heat capacity, and reaction phenomena.
